What's the Difference Between Semi Permanent and Permanent Makeup?

Dana Depta • Aug 20, 2019
There's no doubt that once you've decided to get your eyebrows done that you've started to do your research and have encountered the terms 'semi permanent makeup' and 'permanent makeup'. So what's the difference in the two?

It's a bit of a strange concept, but it is actually the same thing. Let me explain.

The reason why permanent makeup is called as such is because it is a type of cosmetic tattoo. Now, when it comes to tattoos, pigment is implanted into the skin and doesn't get washed away. This is why it's permanent.

Permanent makeup (or semi-permanent makeup) is a bit different to traditional tattooing though. Traditional body tattoos tend to last forever, where as the pigments for permanent makeup will slowly fade throughout the years, generally lasting up to three years or so. This is the case in most people (although there are always exceptions).

Bearing that in mind, allot of artists market their services as semi permanent to highlight this.

So now that you know that there is no difference, it's important to understand that it's all going to last around the same amount of time. Semi permanent makeup and permanent makeup will last for several years.

There's no point to shop around on how long it will last from artist to artist. It's not going to change. The only difference that will make the pigment 'last longer' is the actual brand/ type of pigments. But beware, a longer lasting pigment is not always a good thing. As time goes on, the colour will change, often leaving to an undesirable looking brow, lip or eye- often leading to the pigment having to be removed.
