Permanent Makeup After Care

Eyebrows:

Day ONE (the day of treatment):
Gently wipe the area every hour using a cotton pad with water. Apply a very thin layer of cream provided with a cotton swab.

Your brows will look dark and the skin underneath may be red. There may be some swelling (and may even look uneven). This is normal. Some of the excess pigment may show on the cotton when cleaning. Don't worry, you won't wipe it off!

Day TWO:
Continue to wipe the pigmented area using damp cotton wool pad if there’s a crust in the morning. You may gently wash with an unscented soap (but not under the shower). Gently pat dry with clean towel or tissue or air dry. Do not rub. Continue to use the cream (thinly) if your brows feel dry.

Day THREE:
The brow will start to look darker. They may look flaky or even crusty. This is because the area is scabbing. DO NOT pick at the scabs. DO NOT rub or scratch at it. The scabs must fall off naturally, otherwise the pigment will come out with it and you risk scarring.

Your brows may still be tender, red, dry, or even itch. These symptoms may last for a few more days. This is normal.

For the next 2 weeks:

• DO NOT use harsh soaps, facial cleansers. Baby soap works well.
• Make sure you wash your hair with your head tilted backwards to stop water running down you face. If the area does get wet, pat dry very gently with a clean towel or tissue. Do not wipe or rub with a towel.
• DO NOT do exercises, gym, yoga or any activities that make you sweat. Even if it’s just a little bit or “even if you don’t sweat”.
• DO NOT use makeup on pigmented area for 5 days.
• DO NOT take hot, steamy, long showers.
• DO NOT use sun beds or sunbathe.
• DO NOT use a Jacuzzi, saunas or swimming pools.
NOTE: Aftercare will vary from artist to artist. It will also vary depending on skin type.

Eyeliner:

Day ONE (the day of treatment):

Gently wipe the area every few hours, using a cotton swab with water. Apply a very thin layer of cream provided.

Do not wear contact lenses. Your eyes may be sore, red or puffy after the treatment. Bring sunglasses as they may be sensitive to light.

Day TWO:

Continue to wipe the pigmented area 3-4 times a day. You may gently wash with an unscented soap (but not under the shower). Gently pat dry with clean towel or tissue or air dry. Do not rub. Continue to use the cream.

When the area starts to scab, it may look flaky or even crusty. DO NOT pick at the scabs. DO NOT rub or scratch at it. The scabs must fall off naturally, otherwise the pigment will come out with it and you risk scarring.

For the next 2 weeks:

  1. DO NOT use harsh soaps, facial cleansers. Baby soap works well
  2. Make sure you wash your hair with your head tilted backwards to stop water running down you face
  3. DO NOT do exercises, gym, yoga or any activities that make you sweat.
  4. DO NOT use makeup on pigmented area until the scab comes off
  5. DO NOT take hot, steamy, long showers
  6. DO NOT use sun beds or sunbathe
  7. DO NOT use a Jacuzzi, saunas or swimming pools

Lips:

Lips may ooze a couple of days. Blot and reapply ointment.

After sleeping, crust will have dried on the lips. Wipe gently with water on a cotton round  or put more ointment on to loosen crust, blot and reapply ointment.

Lips will be tender at first. Drink through a straw. Choose foods you can place in your mouth with a fork without touching lips.

Do not excessively stretch lips while they are healing with big smiles, or pucker lips. This includes smoking. Those motions push and pull against the lip edges, applying tension and friction between the strong normal skin surrounding the mouth and the broken inflamed lip edges. Lip skin is a continuation of the delicate mucous membrane in the mouth. It is not strong like normal skin.

On the third day, lips stop oozing and start peeling. This is when the chapped lip feeling is strongest. You may relieve the chapped lip feeling by lightly massaging the lips after placing a layer of ointment on them and making gentle circular motions with a cotton swab. The light, wet massage helps get loose skin off that is ready to come off without pulling off skin that is not ready to come off. The massage relieves the chapped feeling for several hours, then it returns, and you can massage again.

Lips will peel for roughly a week. Other than the massage mentioned above, allow it to flake off on its own. Picking and pulling off skin that is not ready to come off will cause pigment loss and can pull out deeper tissue. The edges or lip liner will be the last to fall off. Pulling this off will result in an uneven splotchy line or an indented scar.

Try to keep toothpaste off lips while healing.

Do not have teeth bleached while healing.

During the peeling process it may look like there is not much colour there. Colour is more apparent by the second week. Final result is not judged for 1-2 months.

Use vitamin E oil during the healing process once scabs have flaked off.

NOTE: It is normal to have discomfort or a feeling of pressure the day of the lip procedure. The next day should be minimal. If you begin having pain on the 3rd or 4th day after being pain-free, it is usually one of three things: 1) Infection, 2) Cold sore, or 3) Allergic contact dermatitis from antibiotic ointment. Switch ointments to rule out that as the cause, and consider a culture to determine bacterial vs yeast infection.

Lip infections after permanent makeup procedures are usually described as burning pain.
